2021 Heartland Nationals

The first race of the Mid-America Sand Drag Series began Memorial Day weekend at Atoka Motorsports Park in Atoka, Oklahoma. Racers from Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Arizona, California, and Tennessee came to maybe get an early points lead in the series or just check out AMP for the first time.

The heads-up classes would run their first two rounds of qualifying on Friday evening. 

The stand out performance in the first session would be Terry Glasscock returning from a season of difficulties to take the number 1 spot in Top Eliminator running a 2.959 off the trailer.

Tommy Springer came away with the number 1 spot in Unlimited ATV with his 3.763.

John Moreland was the lone Top Alcohol competitor during qualifying, he made an impressive 2.770 on a tune that was, “pretty damn fat”.

In the second session of qualifying, John Pate would be the lone competitor this session of Top Eliminator. Pate ran a 2.963 and would jump up 2 spots to take the number 2 qualifying spot.

In Unlimited ATV, top two qualifiers Tommy Springer at 1 and Chris Carlson at 2 would lower their times and retain their positions. Michael Hopkins made the jump to the number 3 qualifier from number 5 running a 3.862.

No runs for Top Alcohol were made.

Quick 16 Cars and ATVs classes took over the rest of the evening. Quick 16 classes were decided by the 16 quickest time slips turned in from test and tune by racers. Both classes ran bracket style. 

Danny Matthews of Oklahoma would take the win in the  Q16 Cars class.

The second day of the Heartland Nationals would showcase the final two qualifying sessions for the heads up classes, first time trial sessions of Pro 1 & 2 Cars, Pro 1 ATV (4.50 & Quicker) as well as eliminations for the Pro 2 ATV (4.51 & Slower), Pee Wees (12 & Under), Juniors (15 & Under), Sportsman Cars, and the Index Classes.

The day would start off with Cameron Pate winning the Pee Wees class!

Time trials for all classes would be up next. Pro 2 ATV & Juniors would run both of their time trials and go right into eliminations as the Pro 1 & 2 Cars, and Pro 1 ATVs would race on Sunday.

In a field of 30, Missouri’s Josh Koch Jr. would take the win over Texas’ Angeleena Quintero in the Juniors class.

Missouri’s Craig McNiel fought through a field of 43 in Pro 2 ATV, taking the win over Arizona’s Mike Brock in the finals.

Action on day three of the 2021 Heartland Nationals would start off with the second and final time trial pass for Pro 1 & 2 Cars and Pro 1 ATVs and then eliminations would begin.

In a field of 17, Missouri’s Ava Winsor would take the win over Texas’ Wyatt Schulz in Pro 2 Cars.

The Mid-American Sand Drag Series will continue at Thunder Valley Sand Drags the weekend of July 24th-26th and then the last stop of the Series will also be at TVSD the weekend of September 23rd-25th.
