2020 Shake & Bake – Day 2

worldsanddragnews

The second day of Shake & Bake started bright and early with the next generation hitting the track via the Mighty Midgets (9 & Under) and Juniors (10-15) categories.

The big winners to come out of those classes were Cooper Sullivan in Mighty Midgets and Keaton Hendricks in the Juniors.

The day would then start into time trials session 1 for the 102 entry Shake & Bake class! This is always a fun class to watch with great variations in vehicle types, engine combinations, etc. The Shake & Bake category is a bracket class with a 5.50 & Faster index with double entries being allowed.

After many, many, many passes down the track from that time trial session, the second Qualifying round of Quick 16 Cars & ATVs would take to the lanes. Quick 16 ATVs would fill up as 8 more contestants signed in and made the 2nd Qualifier to make an even 16 bike field.

Even with the added entrants, Mike Goodale would keep his #1 Qualifying spot with a 3.410 E.T.

In Quick 16 Cars, there were over 20 racers looking to qualify into the field of 16. The bump spot at the beginning of the session was a 3.80 E.T. Anyone qualifying with a slower time than this would not make the 16 car field.

However, after the 2nd Qualifier was over, the #16 spot would qualify with a 3.68 second pass via Gregg Price’s “Lots of G’s” buggy, making this a very quick field of racers. Ryan Kerr maintained his #1 Qualifier spot with his 3.30 second run the day before.

The second time trial session would hit the track and then the show would begin with the 2nd and final Qualifying session for the 2.95 Index class.

Todd James in the California Shaker mud rail would join the field in this session.

In the first round of the Shake & Bake we would see an unfortunate site as 2019’s Winner, Tyler Watkins, and 2018’s Winner, Brian McWethy, would both go down in the first round of competition, putting to rest any conversations about a repeat Champion. Friday night’s 50/50 winner, Tom Hartman Sr., would also suffer a first round loss.

After a long night of racing, our final rounds were set:
The final round of Quick 16 ATV would see Stephanie Roth on her signature Drag Star quad taking on Corey Hamlin on his lay down trike.
Corey would take the win, running a 4.21 on his 4.10 dial in to Stephanie’s 4.17 on her 3.90 dial.

JWI Racing

Quick 16 Cars would see last year’s defending champion, Gregg Price taking on Justin Dees in his altered. This would be a heads up race with both drivers dialing in at 3.65 seconds. Gregg would make it two in a tow with the win, running a 3.66 to Justin’s 3.73.

2.95 Index would see a pair of world record holding machines. Number 2 Qualifier, Adam Roe, in the A/Buggy record holding VW drag buggy vs #4 Qualifier, Burt VanBennekom, in the AA/Dragster record holding nitrous injected dragster.

Adam would get the win, running a 3.01 to Burt’s 3.17. We would see a huge ball of flame come from Burt’s dragster right at the finish line, making it a rough end to a good weekend.

It would all come down to the finals of the Shake & Bake class. The field of 102 came down to WSDN’s Jon Sorg, piloting Jim Bailey’s Blue Thunder jeep, taking on Cory Meyers in his drag truck. Jon would take the win and the big $8,000 prize, running a 3.72 on a 3.69 dial in to Cory’s 4.22 on a 4.28 dial in.

Jon Sorg now joins the likes of Brian McWethy & Tyler Watkins as Shake & Bake Champions.

Shake & Bake 2020 was a great weekend of racing, seeing both bracket & heads up racing. The top 7 spots in the Shake & Bake class would receive a payout! Not a bad day at the office. This event has quickly become one of our favorites and always look forward to covering it and we hope to see it continue on in the future.

Congratulations to all the big winners on the weekend!
