Sunday February 2nd, 2020

A new timing system was brought down from Bakersfield, CA to fix the San Jacinto system and allowed kids racing to begin as scheduled. A large field of junior dragster once again filled the staging lanes along with plenty of junior ATV competitors.

Pee Wee

Brixton Rubeshaw Pee Wee

Brixton Rubeshaw took home the win and a bonus $20 from WSDN this weekend. He was smiling ear to ear after defeating Chapman on a breakout.

Junior ATV

Scottlyn Acevado

Junior ATV was a tough battle as favorite to win Maddox Pena made his way through the field. He faced Scottlyn Acevado in the final. Scottlyn was able to beat out Pena taking home her very first win and a $20 bonus from WSDN.

Junior Dragster

Lily Garcia Junior Dragster

A huge field of junior dragsters was present at San Jacinto, CA. This time an even larger field than the Saturday specialty Junior Dragster Showdown. The winner of the showdown Lily Garcia once again found herself in the final. This time she faced off against Brendan Overton. Lily pulled off the impossible and doubled up beating Overton in a tough match up. Lily celebrated with her family and crew and took home an additional $20 from WSDN.

Motorcycle Pro 2

Caleb Mings Motorcycle Pro 2

Again battling a small field, Motorcycle Pro 2 action saw the Mings clan on opposite sides of the ladder this time. Fate would not let them meet in the final as Randy Mings went out first round setting up a final between Caleb Mings and the young Tyler Hanrahan. Caleb got a slight lead off the line and held out against Tyler to the finish to take home the win.

Motorcycle Pro 1

DJ Noerr Motorcycle Pro 1

Motorcycle Pro 1 had a few more entries than Motorcycle Pro 2 leading to a few more rounds. Brad Olson was deadly on his furry bike making his way through the field to face DJ Noerr in his return to racing in San Jacinto. DJ made the trip worth it with a win over Brad who had an uncharacteristic red light in the final. Noerr still had a decent package if Olson had stayed green running a 4.484 on a 4.48 dial.

Sport UTV

Brian Goldsmith Sport UTV

Sport UTV was added into the Sunday program due to the timing system failure that occurred before their eliminations on Saturday. Unfortunately it led to a few competitors not returning leaving a field of three. Kylie Graham seemed to be the favorite with a killer reaction time first round, but the event win ended up going to Brian Goldsmith.

Motorcycle Gambler

Randy Mings Motorcycle Gambler

Another class that didn’t finish on Saturday was added to the Sunday schedule. Entries were again less than the previous day, but the class still was stacked with tough competitors. Caleb Mings was unable to double up losing first round to Tyler Hanrahan who was on a mission of revenge in round one. Tyler landed himself in the final after a series of killer reaction times giving him the lead. He faced Randy Mings and laid down a solid 0.058 light. Unfortunately Mings was on an even better pass leading off the line with a 0.017 reaction time. Randy held the advantage to the stripe to take home the win.

Heads Up Qaulifying

The suspension of racing action on Saturday cut out the big car 4th round qualifying session. The crew at So Cal Sand Drags were able to give the competitors one last shot prior to Sunday Eliminations. The big news of this round was Mark Punos in his Top Eliminator dragster laying down an identical 2.959 ET to match up to Graham’s from session one. The advantage number one spot would be conceded to Paul Graham with the MPH advantage on his 2.959 pass. Due to severe cases of attrition in the Top Alcohol and A/ Fuel classes would lead to first round being the final round match ups in those categories.

Top Alcohol
1. Jake Morton 2.465
2. Jim Hammond 2.470
3. Bill Peterson Jr. 2.854
4. Jimmy DePasse 2.866

Top Eliminator
1. Paul Graham 2.959
2. Mark Punos 2.959
3. Jim Naffziger 2.965
4. Aaron Bailey 2.996
5. Tommy Zavala 3.263
6. Kyle Farwick 5.278

A/Fuel
1. Sally Rasmussen 2.836
2. Greg Johnson 3.443
3. Mason Lauffer 3.475
4. Dennis Young 7.547

Top Eliminator

Round one of Top Eliminator started with a bit of a disappointment as the Ohio team of Farwick/ Callahan was unable to fire against round one opponent and number one qualifier Paul Graham. Graham soloed on a pedaling pass. Kyle Farwick was able to get his small block powered altered fired after Graham’s pass and was allowed to run down the track in exhibition. The first side by side pass of competitors was Mark Punos and Tommy Zavala. Punos turned on the win light on a decisive victory against Zavala as the Blown Looney dragster still struggled to find the right set-up. Last up was Jim Naffziger piloting for Terry Crawford in the Yabba Dabba Do dragster and Aaron Bailey in his clean white TE dragster. Bailey was at a slight disadvantage according the qualifying order and unfortunately tuned his machine up just a bit too much breaking out with a 2.922 to Naffziger’s 3.091. Semi finals will continue for Top Eliminator at the SCSDA April event.

A/ Fuel

Sally Rasmussen A Fuel

A/ Fuel saw attrition in its field prior to first round eliminations. Mason Lauffer windowed the block of his new Honda power plant Saturday night and was unable to return for round one. New comer Dennis Young in his Pound Sand VW dragster was also having issues this weekend and was unable to make the call. This put Sally Rasmussen and Greg Johnson straight into the final. Sally had a decisive horsepower advantage that she used to take a relatively easy victory over Greg Johnson with a 2.92 to 3.506. Greg did however back up his new B/ Buggy speed record at 94.04MPH.

Top Alcohol

Jim Hammond Top Alcohol

Parts breakage from earlier in the week for Peterson and Morton meant that the final would be number two qualifier Jim Hammond versus number four qualifier Jimmy DePasse. DePasse was pushing hard to break into the 50s this weekend, but in pulling up to the line a blower belt was sent flying off his Pro Mod Jeep putting an end to his day. Hammond pulled up to solo to victory. Another malfunction in the tree meant that the tree didn’t drop and Hammond never received a time. Unfortunately this malfunction was the same issue that shut down racing on Saturday. An unknown electrical gremlin shorted out the system in the place and with no other spare parts, the call was made to suspend the rest of the event. The Pro car classes and remaining rounds for Top Eliminator will be made up at the So Cal Sand Drag Association’s April Event.
