World Sand Drag News visited our first ever race in Mexico and witnessed some amazing action with some of the finest cars Baja had to offer. Over 1500 people came out to see the sand drags at Cuervos Sand Dunes. Thirteen of the quickest cars from all over Mexico battled for dominance in the Super Unlimited class. Choyer Power from La Paz Baja California had the longest haul taking the long road up the peninsula to race in Cuervos. Diablos Off-Road from Caborca came to claim the top spot in the Super Unlimited class but unfortunately were battling ignition issues all weekend. Another top contender was La Caballona from Magdalena Sonora who also had issues, but were able to come back and make a solid exhibition pass. The pro stock engine dragster with a healthy shot of nitrous ran a 3.14 et lifting at the top end. Look like he’s right on the tune after a disastrous nitrous problems. We’ll be looking forward to more fast times from him later this season.

Super Unlimited

Records were broken as Arturo Carmona from Mexicali BC Mexico ran low ET of the day with a whopping 2.94 in the final of Super Unlimited. Carmona broke his own record of 2.99 in his final against the Puerto Peñasco based modified Jeep of the world famous Fonito Gonzales. Gonzales was having issues and didn’t quite break into 3.30s he was hoping for to have shot at Carmona in the final. In trying to make up for his performance disadvantage he went -0.124 red.

Modified 4X4 Jeep

In the Modified 4×4 class the top contender was Moises Roano in his Ford powered Jeep from Ejido Saltillo. Roano used his big horsepower with a 3.61 to get around Alberto Cornejo in the final. Cornejo had the starting line advantage with a 0.090RT to Roano’s 0.135RT, but just didn’t run quick enough only mustering a 3.91. Quick time of the class went to Jorge Covarrubias Jr. with a spectacular 3.55 ET. Alberto Cornejo in his small block powered Jeep from Mexicali.

Covarrubias’ Pass:
