FEATURED FRIDAY
Clay Wallen’s red 1964 CJ5 Jeep
Running a 400ci SBC backed by a TH350 trans, Ford 9in rear end and a Dana 20 transfer case with a Dana 30 front. This a Jeep fan’s Jeep.
Clay regularly runs at the Albany Sand Drags as a top competitor in the Pro Car points series running consistent 5.10s. But his fun doesn’t stop there. Clay regularly dunes his Jeep in the off season. While this is pretty typical in our world of sand drags to have your dune and sand drag vehicle be one in the same, Clay takes it even further.
Clay drag races his Jeep in the pavement 1/4 mile with the exact same set-up only changing tires for the street. His Jeep runs 12.60s at just over 100mph! And forgive us if we sound like an infomercial, “But wait there’s more!” This Jeep is also Clay’s daily driver. Again just a tire swap and he can go get groceries or drive it work. This is quite an accomplishment to have the same vehicle and same set-up run the dunes, sand drags, and pavement drags and still be a reliable daily driver. What’s even cooler is his entire family has hopped on board with this philosophy all running the same set-ups across multiple surfaces. Currently the fastest in their group has run a 4.76 in the 300’ sand course.
Congrats to Clay and his family for representing the true spirit of racers. Who else follows their mantra of having one vehicle do it all? Comment below all of your racecars that find themselves in multiple playgrounds.
