Our first race coverage of 2021 recently took place at the PSDA Arizona ATV Nationals at Dome Valley Raceway in Wellton, AZ. This was the first Pro Sand Drag Association race on the West Coast in roughly 4 years, so it was a highly anticipated event.
In typical PSDA fashion, the event stretched 5 days with the first two being dedicated to Test & Tune. The racers and teams would get their combinations ready for record breaking passes and/or the competition throughout the weekend.
Day 2 of Test & Tune saw a highly anticipated event with the East vs West Team Relentless (Ricky Thorpe/ Misty Barton) vs Team Velocity (Carlos Correia/ Jared Azevedo) grudge race. The internet battle turned to the track with bragging rights and a myriad of undisclosed bets up for grabs. Both competitors lined up straight off the trailer with the East Coast team seemingly at the disadvantage being 2000 miles from home. Team Relentless would prove this wouldn’t matter with a 3.525 to Team Velocity’s 3.556, but Jared’s near perfect 0.004 reaction time to Misty’s 0.051 meant the West Coast would take the win with just a 0.016 margin of victory.
Racing would officially start on Day 3 with the Bracket & Index Classes hitting the track. Each racer would get a single test pass before the bracket class began. A Field of 47 would make its way down to 2, with Oregon’s Andy Seiver taking on Michigan’s Dave Turner.
Andy would take the win, which was accompanied by quite a few cheers from the Oregon crowd.
Bracket:
1st Andy Seiver
2nd Dave Turner
Index classes were next to take the track. Same as the bracket class, each racer was allowed a test pass before competition. Only the first round of each class was run through before the track staff decided to postpone the remainder of each class to Friday afternoon due to getting late in the night.
