Thursday

The Pacific NW Shootout returned in 2021 and marked WSDN’s first trip to the Albany Sand Drags in beautiful Albany, Oregon. Native Oregon racers were set to do battle with heavy hitters in the West Coast ATV scene with riders from California and Arizona who made the long trek up North. Racing action began Thursday with index classes after a morning open test and tune session. Indexes started at a 4.20 Index and progressed to the Open 3.39 & Quicker Index all providing super quick and tight competition.

4.20 Index

The 4.20 Index class saw Oregonian Douglas Wells take out Tessa Nunes who was riding Dennis Williams’ super clean banshee. Dennis moved onto the final onboard his daughter’s new bike to face off against Wells. Douglass would get the jump off the line, with Dennis catching him and trying to put a brake job at the stripe, but it wouldn’t be enough as Douglass would take the win.

2nd Dennis Williams

4.00 Index

The 4.00 Index saw a great mix of Oregonians and Californians in the fray. Going down to the semis the California team was whittled away to the sole survivor of David Markle against a full ladder of Oregonians. FIrst pair out was Tevvin Adams against Brad Kyllo in a Raptor vs Banshee shootout. Adams on the Raptor would make quick work of Kyllo and earn himself a spot in the finals. Markle would bog slightly off the line, locking up an all Oregon final with Tevvin Adams against Erin Yutzie on her Banshee. Erin would throw away any chances she had against Tevvin with a red light start.

2nd Erin Yutzie

3.80 Index

More Banshee vs Raptor action was present in the 3.80 Index. Jacki Clason from Springfield, Oregon tried to put Bruno Ayala from Arizona on the trailer, but didn’t have enough gusto. Where Ayala’s youth would make up one half of the finals, Steve Seiver’s experience would make up the other. This time youth won as Ayala the out-of-towner took home top honors in the 3.80 Index.

2nd Steve Seiver

3.60 Index

As we climbed into the quicker indexes, competition only got fiercer. Eric Wells used some Redline power to beat out Jared Azevedo on Carlos Correia’s Velocity Racing 425cc bike. He would face Lacey George in the final who earned a semi-final bye after defeating Wyatt Templeton in round 1. Another Raptor vs Banshee bout was set with this one being all Banshee as Eric once again put that Redline horsepower to work against Lacey and her Cuervo built bike.

3.40 Index

The small class here in the index eliminations had three solid competitors. Angel Castillo faced off against Jared Azevedo riding Arlo Cully’s record holding triple cylinder no bar bike “Herbie”. Castillo just didn’t have enough for that matchup and set up the final for Azevedo and Carson Templeton aboard his nitrous assisted Raptor. The H.O.D. team managed to fit in a quick clutch job between rounds on “Herbie” and came to lay down another quick lap. Templeton was certainly ready for the triple cylinder Banshee, but that “hot take” didn’t last long with a huge nitrous backfire right off the line as Azevedo disappeared down track. Carson leapt off the bike and luckily was uninjured from the scary moment.

2nd Carson Templeton

3.39 & Quicker Index

Four of the quickest bikes on the property were entered in the 3.39 & Quicker Index class. First round had Dale Solberg against Jared Azevedo this time on the IDK Racing Scimitar twin. Jared took both ends of the racetrack against Solberg chopping down the tree and running quicker out the backend. Amanda Seiver on her Scimitar was next up against Angel Castillo aboard the D&M Racing nitrous twin. Castillo would do some riding to advance to the final while Sevier would have problems off the line. The final round would end a little oddly with Jared Azevedo taking the win with Angel Castillo not even leaving the line. What eventually came down to a call to re-run the final due to a timing error. The IDK Racing team hurt the motor on the last pass and had to scramble to find replacement studs to piece the motor back together. What might have easily been a win for D&M due to a hurt IDK motor, didn’t turn out as expected with Jared Azevedo making another A to B pass and setting low ET of the event that day.

Friday

Pro 2

Friday competition kicked off with Pro Bracket classes. Each class was given a test and tune session before eliminations began. Brad Kyllo from Troutdale, Oregon defeated Jayden Peña from California to earn a bye into the final of Pro 2. There he’d face another native Delwin Ellam. Kyllo chased down Ellam for the Pro 2 win.

Brad Kyllo Pro 2 Winner

Pro 2
1st Brad Kyllo
2nd Delwin Ellam Jr

Pro 1

In the 3.99 and quicker Pro 1 bracket we’d see another set of Oregonians in the final. Eric Wells would take the long way around the ladder going through Steve Seiver and Burt Boatman in the quarter and semi-finals respectively. He’d be looking to double up on the weekend thus far against Tevvin Adams who took out Carter Christopherson in the quarter-finals to get the bye into the final round. The ever consistent Eric Wells was on his game again locking up a double up on the weekend and preventing Adams from doing the same.

Weight Classes

The ATVDragRacer.com weight classes that regularly offer some of the tightest and most exciting competition in the sport were up after the bracket class finals. Unfortunately a malfunctioning scale meant that accurate weights could not be properly measured with exact certainty. The classes had a meeting to determine what would be considered the minimum weight to be recorded with essentially three of the four scales functioning at full capacity. The decision was also made that none of the times recorded would be legal for records.

The debut of the 500lb/916cc Raptor class only had a few entrants with Tevvin Adams circling back around to take out Brandon Hudgeon in the final. Hopefully with fixed scales and increased participation we can see this class bring out the same level of competition as the 450/475 Banshee class.

Tevvin Adams 500/916 Winner

500/916 Raptor
1st Tevvin Adams
2nd Brandon Hudgeon

In said class we had Andy Seiver take out Californian Bill LeFever in the semis. His reward was to face Jared Azevedo who had a bye into the final. Andy had a great reaction time off the line, but it wasn’t enough as Azevedo was able to take it back at the stripe.

Jared Azevedo 450/475 Winner

4 Stroke Limited Classes

Next we moved into the single cylinder four stroke classes with the 0-540 Small Block and 771+ Big Block classes in contention.
Kalista Summerlin faced off against Cameron Spidle in the 0-540 class. Cameron was dead late off the line and handed an easy win over to Kalista.

Kalista Summerlin 0-540 Small Block 4 Stroke Winner

0-540 Small Block 4 Stroke

2nd Cameron Spidle

Cameron learned his lesson in the small block class and came back around on Tevvin Adam’s bike to take on Jacki Clason on her Cuervo Raptor. This time he was no slouch on the tree and was able to put Clason on the trailer. Lacey George took one back for the ladies raking out Brandon Hudgeon who was riding a much smaller cc bike. Wyatt Templeton rounded out the field on a bye run. Cameron Spidle had the bye into the final and took it easy, opting to just break the beams and save the bike for the final. He’d face Lacey George who took out Wyatt Templeton in the semis. Lacey George took the reaction time advantage against Spidle and continued to walk away to take the 771+ Big Block 4 Stroke class win.

Bonus Pro Brackets

With the limited number of four stroke cc class entries, the Albany staff opened the track to a bonus round of Pro Bracket racing.
The Pro 1 quarter-finals came down to a familiar grouping of competitors with Lacey George vs Jared Azevedo, Steve Seiver vs Eric Wells and Wyatt Templeton getting the bye. Lacey would take out Azevedo and Eric would squeak by Seiver. Lacey George would get the bye into the semis where she’d be the other half of an all Raptor final against Wyatt Templeton who took out Eric Wells. Wyatt was certainly pumped by that semi-final win and was amped up enough to holeshot Lacey George and leave himself a little cushion to tap the brakes at the big end of the track and take the Bonus Pro 1 win.

Wyatt Templeton Bonus Pro 1 Winner

Bonus Pro 1
1st Wyatt Templeton
2nd Lacey George

In the Bonus Pro 2, Mike Miller ,who came all the way from Bakersfield, CA, took out Delwin Ellam in the quarter-finals. He was the last man standing against a field of ladies with Tessa Nunes, once again aboard Dennis Williams’ Banshee, taking out Kalista Summerlin and Erin Ytizie taking the bye into the semis. Mike would get the lucky bye into the final. Tessa Nunes would get an easy round into the final with Erin Yutzie bogging badly off the line. In a close all California final round, Mike Miller would defeat Tessa Nunes for the Pro 2 win and would wrap up the second day of racing at the Pacific NW Shootout.

No Bar Suspended

The Albany Sand Drags facility was hosting some of the quickest no bar bikes on the planet for the Pacific NW Shootout. The semis saw Cameron Spidle the #1 qualifier red light against Dale Solberg on the biggest upset of the class. The loss was made even more painful as Dale only went about half track before encountering issues and abandoning the run. Jared Azevedo was up next on the new Herbie 2.0 (the evolution of the current WSDN A/No Bar Pro ATV record holder) take out Brandon Sherrell who went sky high and slammed the bike back down to the earth. The final set between Jared Azevedo riding Arlo Cully’s “Herbie” triple Banshee and Dale Solberg aboard Matt McCormick’s nitrous assisted Raptor was set to be a best two out of three bout. Jared had the performance advantage by a couple tenths, but these no bar bikes are always unpredictable. First round was the expected with Azevedo taking the win over Solberg. When it came to round two, the team of Solberg and McCormick forfeited the match to Azevedo/ Cully. They had been nursing a bent a-arm from earlier in the event and per Solberg they were running out of gear way too early and didn’t have time to make an adjustment to even get them close to the numbers “Herbie” was putting down. Jared took a victory lap in celebration of the No Bar Suspended win with another 3.5x pass.

Pit Bike Class

The heat of the day was passed with some great fun with the introduction of the pit bike class. Everyone came out with their pit vehicles to participate with season racers riding alongside crew members, wives, kids, you name it. It was an absolute blast to see everyone having an awesome time. Make no mistake though, there was serious competition happening with these racers new and old getting every ounce out of their underpowered machines as the crowd cheered them on. At the end of the class it was Troy Weber who took out Elisha Templeton for the win.

426-525cc Two Stroke Limited

With the heat passed, the limited two stroke classes were ready to lay down some numbers. Some familiar faces from throughout the weekend were in the semi-finals with Eric Wells getting an easy win handed to him on a red light. The lucky odd man out, Jared Azevedo on Carlos Correia’s bike had a bye into the final that they took to try to get the tune up ready for their matchup against Eric. The final was a close match, but the win went over to Eric Wells and his Redline horsepower.

651-775cc Two Stroke Limited

The next engine size break saw the 775cc bikes in competition. The semis had Bruno Ayala and Angel Castillo face off with the D&M power behind Castillo getting the job done. Jared Azevedo onboard Herbie faced off against Cameron Spidle (a match-up many anticipated the No Bar Suspended final would have been). Spidle got the job done and headed into the final against Castillo. The red bug plagued Cameron Spidle again in the finals against Angel Castillo handing the win over to the D&M team.

2nd Cameron Spidle

775cc+ Two Stroke Limited

The biggest two strokes were out in this class with some giant Scimitar Twins and the underdog 10 mil of Wesley Fuller (Bruno Ayala jockeying). First round had Jared Azevedo put the Scimitar power down on the IDK Racing twin against Bruno Ayala, easily having enough horsepower on the big end of the track. Amanda Seiver had a bye into the finals on her Seiver Racing Scimitar. In the finals it was IDK Racing all the way with Jared getting the win over Amanda.

Single Cylinder Open

The big four strokes were up next. Cameron Spidle was back riding for Tevvin Adams and was matched up against Wyatt Templeton in the semis who had a legal single the round before. Green lights for both competitors this time led to Spidle moving onto the finals. He’d face Lacey George who had the bye and elected to just break the beams and save her Raptor for the final. Once Cameron was back and cooled off the two took the track. Lacey George got a little amped up on the starting and went red, handing the win over to Cameron Spidle.

Unlimited Open

Unlimited Open only had two competitors partially due to the overlap with the Quick 8 class being run immediately following this class. We saw Dale Solberg riding Orlando Sanchez’s twin against Jared Azevedo on “Herbie”. Dale almost double stepped at the starting line, but was able to stay green and recover on the nitrous two stroke to take out the ever tough Azevedo.

Dale Solberg Unlimited Open Winner

Quick 8

The Quick 8 wss turned into a Quick 7 with Jared Azevedo on the IDK Racing Scimitar taking to the track first on a single pass. He ran a blistering 3.233 which not only was a track record, but also a NSDR record in the making as the quickest NA Twin ever. Talk about setting the bar high for the Quick 8. Next up was Lacey Goerge on her Cuervo Raptor against Dale Solberg on the D&M entry. Lacey pulled off the win as the sole four stroke entry in the Quick 8. Cameron Spidle and Angel Castillo faced off on their twins with Castillo taking the edge. Last pair up was Amanda Seiver on her Scimitar against Eric Wells and the consistently quick “Emma”. Wells went sideways towards the guardrail and that left no room to try to catch Seiver. Round two had Lacey George run against the record breaking IDK entry. They beat George and fired off a 3.240 solidifying the NSDR record and proving this Scimitar powered machine was a bracket bike! Angel Castillo took out Amanda Seiver who had issues at the starting line and was unable to take the bike down the track. The Castillo/ Azevedo final was set. Castillo and the D&M team had big ground to make up against the new NSDR Open Twin Limited record holder. Unfortunately they couldn’t find the extra horsepower to get around another blistering quick pass with a 3.255 coming from Azevedo and the IDK Racing team.

Sunday

Sport Bracket

Racing competition began winding down Sunday with a double elimination sport bracket with an added $250 donated by IDK Racing. Andy Seiver got through some tough rounds in the winner bracket including his father Steve. The loser’s bracket saw Cameron Spidle riding the K&T powered no bar bike through a mixed field of California and Oregon competitors. He’d have to beat Andy twice in the final to take home the win and the extra $250. Andy Seiver proved why he was the winner’s bracket victor and went undefeated on Sunday taking the win against Cameron.

Youth

Three youth competitors were left Sunday with the two grandsons of Burt Boatman (Jay and Azzy) as well as the young Bryce Seiver. Double elimination would again be the format. Brother’s Jay and Azzy faced off in round one with Jay getting the win. Jay would then face Bryce Seiver who would get around him on his Suzuki LT80. Jay and Azzy would face off again this time with little brother Azzy getting the win. Azzy would pull off the long shot and was able to beat Bryce Seiver twice in a row to take the Youth class win.
