Glory Days From Iceland

GLORY DAYS!!!
Hafliði Guðjónsson’s Jeep in Akureyri 1996. Originally built in 1992 to copy a car he saw in a Four Wheeler Magazine, it was powered by 327ci SBC with nitrous and backed by a Powerglide transmission. It started as a 4×4, but was later converted to 2WD because of rule issues in Iceland. Hafliði crashed this car twice. The first time was a small rollover in ‘96 during his second qualifying pass at an event. Luckily there was minimal damage and he was able to fix it and ended up winning the championship and setting a new recod back then with a 3.82. In 2001, the small block was sold and replaced with a 468 BBC again with nitrous. The new combo mustered a best time of 3.62. Bad luck led to another crash in 2004, this one being much more serious. It took Hafliði and his son Kristján one year to fully rebuild the car. Unfortunately after that rebuild, the car was never the same having very unpredictable handling. Trying to improve the setup, the duo moved the front tires forward and the rear end back to stretch the car to a 125” wheelbase, but it was still a wild guess everytime what the car would do. The car was sold in 2007 and then Kristján bought it back in 2010 and put a 632ci engine in it. He struggled with it for a few years before moving the combo over to his new chassis in 2015. The Guðjónsson’s still have the body and are always talking about building some new chassis to put it on, so you never know.
